United Nations

Working in the UN

The United Nations began to function as the heir of the League of Nations following the Second World War in 1946, with the objective of becoming a supranational institution that promoted peace through development and international cooperation. At the moment, 193 nations are member states of the organization. The UN is made up out of its main Headquarters, its Regional Economic and/or social Commissions, its International Criminal Tribunals, its numerous Programmes and Specialized Agencies, and its ongoing Peace Operations worldwide. Therefore, there is a wide range of careers open to interested professionals throughout these different working-bodies; such as being part of the staff, the Young Professional’s Programme, the Language Professionals, the Associate Expert Programme, the Volunteer Programme, the Internship Programe or the Temporary jobs staff.

Their main work values are integrity, professionalism and respect for diversity. In order to work for the UN, not only must you respect these values but you have to be skilled in teamwork, creativity, communication, planning and be ready to be constantly broadening your knowledge and improving your capabilities.

To have a career in the UN means to be a part of a dynamic and international environment, where decisions are made which impact the world as a whole. It means becoming an individual who will be challenged with problems that have a global reach, in aspects ranging from political and economical, to the social and environmental. It means participating in an international organization that is present in every country and that is constantly working and contributing for peace and development in the world.
