Manufacturing
Pursuing a career in manufacturing is akin to becoming a part of the engine that gets the economy moving forward. Manufacturing plays a prominent role in every country because of its multiplier effect. In other words, it creates businesses in many other industries, as it requires additional services and products as part of its process. Anybody interested in a career in manufacturing can develop his or her professional path in aerospace, technology, consumer goods, textiles, automobiles, steel or telecommunications, to mention a few of the options available.
Many of the major players in the manufacturing industry worldwide have grown conscious of the importance of adopting environmentally friendly policies and practices in their organizations and, therefore, have adopted low greenhouse gas emission processes and reforestation practices to their production routines. Thus, working in any of these companies definitely implies keeping an eye on the impact that the company’s actions have on the environment. Manufacturing and automobiles have a long-standing existing relationship, and it is an ideal niche for anyone interested in having a career in manufacturing. The ups and downs that the automotive industry has experienced since its inception are mainly related to consumer confidence in the economy, and gas prices.
Many automotive companies have lately combined with electronics manufacturers in order to provide cars with attractive additional features, making them even more appealing to the consumer. Chemicals manufacturing is also a very interesting field in which to develop a career in manufacturing. This industry is vital as it plays a prominent supportive role for many other manufacturing processes.
It includes other consumer goods such as bleaches, cleaners or medicines, through to paints and solvents for other industries. You may also like to have a career in manufacturing focused on technology. Electronics is a large niche that covers a wide area, from distribution equipment to communication gadgets to household appliances.
The development of this niche is closely related to the ups and downs experienced by other industries. The manufacturing industry has been affected by the latest global financial crisis and its various sectors have experienced severe job losses. In many of these industries, the wages that workers earn have not varied significantly over the last years. Those that work in automobiles, aerospace and steel enjoy the highest salaries, whilst those working in the textile industry have the lowest.
It has also been one of the economic sectors that have steadily employed fewer people since 2000. This is due to the fact that technology advancements have promised more efficiency at a lower cost and, therefore, fewer people are required.
A major aspect that anyone interested in pursuing a successful career in manufacturing should be well aware of is the supply chain. The supply chain can be explained as the network of suppliers and vendors that make it possible for a company to produce its products. It is a constant flow that includes different types of vendors.
In many industries, the suppliers provide materials to another supplier who then processes them and, once processed, delivers them to a third supplier who for delivery to the end user. In other cases, the supply chain is extended across borders as a company may have its assembling unit in one country, and manufacturing unit in another.
Needless to say, logistics, wholesalers and retail sales play important roles in the supply chain. If you wish to develop a career in manufacturing as a supply manager your tasks will mainly include making sure that each of the links of the chain works properly, and that each supplier provides the next with the supplies requested to the specification and within the time-frame expected.
