Fashion

Developing a successful career in fashion is a professional objective that many creative and enthusiastic individuals wish to achieve. Fashion has always been considered a glamorous world in which different side- and sub-industries such as finance, marketing, consulting, development, design, wholesale and retail sale also play a prominent role.

As with any other industry, entering the fashion industry should not be overly challenging as long as your resume and your application strategy as a whole is strong enough to convey a positive image of yourself, and demonstrates that you will be a valuable player in any fashion company.

Whilst within the oil and gas industry, education and academic background play a prominent role in determining whether somebody will be successful in this field, experience seems to be much more important in order to develop a strong career in fashion.

Most of the major players in this industry, be they fashion or jewelry designers, consultants, marketing or sales experts, have been part of the world of fashion for a significant amount of time. Some of them will have developed their career in fashion within one company; others may have moved from smaller to bigger companies as they gained experience and thus sought more interesting and challenging positions or valuable experience in order to develop their own company and brand.

In fact, most of the people who are interested in working in this industry have an entrepreneurial spirit, and a desire to create their own fashion trends. With this being said, if you are interested in working in the fashion world, you should make your best effort and try to gain as much experience as possible, directly in the field or within related industries. For instance, selling jewelry or completing an internship with a fashion-oriented marketing or consulting firm will provide you with an interesting professional background that will be highly valued for anyone reviewing your CV or resume.

Needless to say, having some academic background related to this area will also be greatly appreciated but, as previously stated, potential employers are mainly focused on the prospective candidate’s experience and in his or her strength and commitment to the pursuit of a successful career within fashion. A job interview in the fashion industry will not differ greatly from any other interview you may have already experienced. If you are applying for a position in a consulting firm you may be asked to work on a case-study, and then provide support for your choices and discuss your course of action with the interviewer.

If you are applying for a designer’s position you may be asked to provide some of your latest designs or share your opinion regarding the latest collection issued by the company. As a general piece of advice, keep focused all throughout the interview and make sure you have a strong application strategy that will convince the potential employer that you will definitely be a valuable asset in the organization.

Regarding the payment received by those pursuing a career in fashion, remuneration may not be as glamorous as you have initially thought, especially if you land an entry position. However, those in high positions of management or on the board of directors can enjoy much better paid jobs that usually include access to stock options of the company and a wardrobe allowance.

In addition, the pay itself may vary from organization to organization, even for the same position or similar responsibilities. Companies in the fashion world vary greatly in size and market share and, therefore, it is difficult to provide a standard salary to take as a reference.
