Energy, Oil and Gas

Pursuing a career in energy or developing a professional career in oil industries can be challenging and demanding as both economic sectors play a very prominent role in the world economy. The energy sector is in charge of producing, converting and distributing fuels to be used for light, heat and propulsion. And the business organizations that perform these activities are dependent of many other investing, equipping and servicing firms that provide them with all the supplies they require.

With this being said, a career in energy or a career in oil may imply either working in one of the major energy or oil companies such as ExxonMobil, Chevron Texaco or Royal Dutch/ Shell or for any of the seismic assessment, investing, well drilling or pollution assessment organizations that provide the major energy companies with the services and supplies they require to perform their tasks.

Those interested in developing a career in energy can choose between doing so in the oil and gas sector or in the electricity sector. Although both of them belong to the same niche, the activities each of them performs, the way in which they are regulated and the economic aspect of each of them are quite specific.

This is the main reason why people who start a career in oil rarely cross over to the electricity sector. The oil industry is one of the most important ones in the US economy and it comprises not only the production and distribution of fuel but also the wax to make crayons, asphalt for roads or solvents to dilute paint.

Some oil companies are devoted to upstream activities, that is to say, to exploration and extraction from oil sources. Others focus on midstream activities, that is to say, oil refining and transportation. And there are some oil companies that focus in retail and wholesale distribution.

Those who pursue a career in oil in the upstream or midstream sectors have to be willing to work in an international environment and be ready not only to travel abroad but also live overseas for quite large periods of time.
